Who are the DC SistaGirls?
Good question. Actually, any professional sister "can" be a DC SistaGirl in theory. DCSG's, by definition, are professional women in the DC metro area (also known as the DMV). They gather together online to form a digital tribe of friendship and camaraderie.
History
DCSG started as a Yahoo group in 2000. The goal was to create a small, sacred space where sisters could come together to share in private. Primarily comprised of professional, upwardly mobile women, these women often found themselves working in environments where they were the only (or one of a few) sisters. Needing an outlet where they could share concerns about things that they couldn't really share with co-workers (such as information about hairstyles and salons, good tailors or seamstresses, where to find great work outfits that didn't kill your budget, etc.), DCSG was formed.
Over the years, we grew to include occasional events and gatherings, which really served to increase the bonds between sistas. In a city that can be cutthroat and in a world that swears that black women cannot come together and work together, DC SistaGirls managed to defy those stereotypes. True friendships formed within this group, and it is our culture to share information freely with each other.
Goals
The goals of DC SistaGirls are simple. We come together to hang out with like-minded women who also enjoy socializing, chatting and getting together occasionally. The goal, ultimately, is friendship and good times.
Today
Today, our Yahoo group still runs but it is not our primary digital space. We are now meeting on Facebook in a private, secret group. We still discuss a variety of topics including reality television, politics, celebrity gossip, local and national events, clothing trends and shopping.. and more.
Our membership is open to any sista (any location) who wants to mingle online with other professional black women.
New members are always welcome. Our rules are simple, we don't tolerate drama and it is a men-free zone.
